IBM Watson Goes to School

January 31, 2013 in Features, Hardware, News by TK

So news is out that IBM’s Watson which pwned the grand champions of Jeopardy is headed to school at RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). It’s not going there to learn simple algebra or other courses but rather going so it can “learn”. It’s almost scary to think that AI has advanced this much. IBM Watson was famously on Jeopardy and beat out the best of the best in Jeopardy.

I’m almost afraid of what Watson can potentially become. I mean at the end of it all it’s great that science is progressing at such a fast rate, but my imagination strays in the direction of skynet and the AI in iRobot and how those “learning” machines decided that humans were a flaw and it needs to eliminate it.  What do you think of all this AI progressing? Should the scientists and the braintrust at IBM be careful of what Watson can be? You be the judge.
